The Superior School of Art & Design in Brest - ESAB

The ESAB is higher education institution combining workshop experiments and theoretical teaching to provide each student with expertise in conducting unique research work and projects.

The school is open to cooperation with other higher education institutions and art and design exhibition and production venues. One of the predominant features of the course is its encouragement of mobility and of both individual and group initiatives within the cultural sphere.

The "Écoles supérieures d'arts" are higher education institutions under the educational aegis of the French Ministry for Culture. Courses are open to school leavers with the baccalauréat qualification (and under certain conditions equivalent qualifications). The schools issue nationally recognised qualifications.

"Écoles supérieures d'arts" courses are now regulated by the new European Credits Transfert System (ECTS) introduced following the Bologna Agreements signed in 1999. In France, the resulting reform of the education system is known as LMD (Licence - Bachelor's degree, Master - Master's degree, Doctorat - Doctorate) and is aimed at standardising qualifications across Europe.

After 3 years of study :
the "Diplôme National d'Arts Plastiques (DNAP - National Visual Arts Diploma), (with access to the  DNSEP)
or
the "Diplôme National d'Arts et Techniques (DNAT - National Arts and Techniques Diploma) (short vocational course)

After 5 years of study :
the "Diplôme national Supérieur d'Expression Plastique" (DNSEP - Narional Higher Qualification of Visual Arts Expression)

These nationally recognised qualifications enable students who so wish to directly sit the competitive admission examinations of other art courses in France or abroad by transfer of credits. The French Ministry for Culture ensures that all the French "Écoles supérieurs d'arts" authorised to issue these qualifications operate in the same manner and have consistent objectives. They all have the same course structure, split into three phases.

1 phase : foundation course, first year, L1 (first year of BA)
2 phase : theory phase, second and third year, L2 and L3 (second and third year of BA)
3 phase : project phase, fourth and fifth year, M1 and M2 (first and second year of MA)

Foundation course
Theory phase
DNAT
DNAP
Project phase
DNSEP

a. Undergraduate

The first year, L1 (Licence 1)

Aims to provide a foundation that is essential for the rest of the course and to familiarise students with th various tools.
It is hinged upon three main objectives : enabling students to improve their work and researchcapacity, their analytical skills and their ability to figure out their relationship with the world.
There is an examination at the end of the year.

The theaory phase L2 - L3 (Licence 2 - Licence 3), long or short course

During these two years, students learn about methods and tools. Developing their own artistic attitude, though not taking priority, remains essential to make the most of the course.
Students decide to attend the short course (DNAT option) or a long course (DNAP, DNSEP). Specialisation in Art or Design.

b. Postgraduate

The project phase M1 - M2 (Master 1 - Master 2)

After having passed the DNAP or DNAT examinations, and after approval from the faculty commission to continue the course, students devote their time to research over the M1 and M2 years to sit the DNSEP examination.

Within this framework, each school defines its course content according to its history, environment, faculty members, projects and its accredited specialisations.

The "École supérieures d'arts" in Brest stands out for the close relationship between its research areas and its natural environment, both urban and coastal.
Over the last few years an educational project has been developed favouring close ties with the city's other higher education institutions, economic players and the school's natural partners (cultural institutions such as art centres, museums and theatres).
The school's project is marked by a permanent drive to foster cooperation between the various fields of art and design, in particular through joint research workshops.

II- Qualifications and Specialisations

The "École supérieure d'arts in Brest is accredited for :

• DNAP (3 years), specialisation in Art or Design,
• DNAT (3 years), specialisation in Spatial Design,
• DNSEP (5 years), specialisation in Art or Design

III- Course

The L1 foundation year is compulsory for all courses. Above all, it is geared towards making students confront their choices. Making students sensitive to visual arts, and giving them information and experiences raising their awareness of the artistic study and practices regardless of the area of specialisation. Discovery and confrontation are two major goals of this foundation year. Students who pass the exam at the end of the year decide to continue :
• Either with the short Spatial Design course leading to the DNAT qualification
• Either with the long course leading to the DNAP and DNSEP qualifications.

IV- Long Course

As of the second year, students decide to specialise in Art, Design or Spatial Design.
The same basic lessons in general knowledge, drawing, volume, photography and techniques form the core curriculum for the three areas of specialisation.
Students incorporate the lessons and workshops specific to theo her specialisations and the seminars into their course to add to their personal paths, particulary by attending the "Ateliers de Recherche et de Création (ARC - Research and Creation workshops) shared between the two specialisations (Art and Design) and open to L3, M1 and M2 students as a priority.
Students can also put forward a proposal to spend a period of time in other institutions in France or abroad, or for internships with companies, for all or part of the academic year. A faculty commission sets the conditions for approval, monitoring and accreditation.

V- Specialisations

a. Art

As of the second semester of the L3 year and during the entire project phase, the course is geared towards helping students to structure the theoretical and pratical aspects of their personal projects. Each student's particular issues also emerge by attending the "Ateliers de recherche et de création (ARC- Reaserch and Creation Workshops), covering both specialisations (Art and Design). Meetings with figures from contemporary art, artists, critics and art centre directors are regularly organised. The vocational aspect is underpinned by the close partnership we have with local cultural institutions such as the Passerelle art centre or "Le Quartz - Scène nationale".

b. Design

This specialised course is organised much like the Art course.
The projects developed at ESAB concern more specifically the fields of spatial design or object design. Students are encouraged to take part in competitions throughout the course. The vocational aspect is underpinned by cooperation on specific projects with local economic players such as Thales or Cabasse.

c. Spatial Design
Short course, DNAT

This three-year post-baccalauréat course stands out for its more vocational-based training compared to the DNAP.
The faculty members in Brest focus on the issues related to space and the design of objects in a given space.
The DNAT course gives students a qualification after three years of study which provides them with key expertise for the job market : design and engineering consulting firms, urban planning agencies, design and architecture firms, building, layout and furnishing companies, landscaping experts, companies specialised in developing restricted spaces, etc.
At the end of the third year, students with the DNAT qualification, may, subject to the approval of the admissions commission, continue on the fourth year of the Design course or apply to other higher education institutions.

VI- Teaching

The teaching provided at the "École supérieure d'arts" in Brest is geared towards training creative visual artists and designers working in the sphere of art (in all its forms), and in the fields of teaching, the environment, industry and business.

The disciplines taught are as follows :

VII- Guest workshops, conferences, exhibitions

- Artists and designers are regularly invited by a professor or a group of professors to run a workshop as part of the school's education project.
- Art an design specialists, artists and critics are among the speakers attending conferences throughout the year which offer various insights into the issues developed in the school.
- Art and design exhibitions are presented in the school's gallery, on a professor's initiative or as part of an educational project worked on within the school.

VIII- Ateliers de recherche et création (ARC - Research and creation workshops)

In both areas of specialisation (Art and Design), research is conducted as part of the contemporary social and cultural environment.
The ARCs offer a method and specific research area based on diversified teaching (lectures, seminars, guest workshops, conferences and tutorials) and contributions from guest artists and researchers. Each session focuses on a different theme each year.
Research work is assessed through exhibitions, dissertations and objects which bear witness to the various types of visual expression.

IX- International exchanges and trips

The ESAB is a member of the European Socrates Erasmus network which aims to coordinate and step up professor and student exchanges between equivalent institutions. Stays abroab are recommended in the fourth year (M1). These stays must be in keeping with students' personal research projects and arranged in agreement with the school's faculty members.
Study trips are an integral part of the course. Their purpose is to encourage students to whet their curiosity and keep abreast of the latest artistic developments in France and abroad (Venice Biennale, Manifesta, Documenta, Paris Salon du Meuble, Créteil International Women's Film Festival, etc.)
Since September 2009, the International office has been enlarged and the School counts several schools as partners in order to develop international exchanges for students and teachers both in Europe (through ERASMUS programme) and throughout the world. The ESAB is now partner with two Superior Institutions in Art & Design in Germany, four schools in Spain, two in England but also the "Conservatoire d'Art Multimédias du Mali, the UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal), Ackland University of Technology in New-Zealand and the "Institut Supérieur des Arts du Multimédia de la Manouba", in tunisia.

X- Faculty

Almost all of the school's faculty members are artists, designers, architects and technicians who work in contemporary creation.
Guest artists, designers and researchers round off the team and help students work on more specific projects in the form of international or guest workshops throughout the year.

XI- FACILITIES

The ESAB facilities are located on two separate sites.
- The main building, in the city centre, houses the administrative offices and main teaching areas : workshops, classrooms, lecture hall, multimedia library, international workshops for L3, M1 and M2 students (specialisation in Art or Design, and DNAT).
- The Lebergot annexe, located in a residential area between the Le Bouguen university campus and the Penfeld exhibition centre (allow for a good twenty minutes by bus), houses international workshops for L1 and L2 students. Part of the technical facilities are found in the annexe. Further education and extra-curricular classes are also held here.

The multimedia library

The signifiant collection of publications abd catalogues, videos and CD-ROMs, and subscriptions to various periodicals cover the range of disciplines taught at the school. The library is open to faculty members and students who wish to consult the collection and a lending system is extended to the network of academic libraries. The computerised management system can be used to consult the collection and borrow books from all libraries in the Brest network.

The School Gallery Association

The school gallery is managed and its programme organised by an association governed by the French law of 1901. The committee approves four to six events or exhibitions scheduled from October to June, upon proposal of professors or external figures who are associated with the school. The programme's content and schedule take educational requirements onto account.

Technical workshops

To carry out their projects; students have access to technical workshop supervised by an assistant and instructor : computer graphics, photo-video, engraving, serigraphy, metals, modelling, models-prototypes.
The cafetaria, on the ground floor of the school, is a place for students to unwind.

XI- PRATICAL INFORMATION

a. Admission conditions / downloading incoming students application form.pdf    (for students from partner schools only)

For students from partner schools, admissions will be proceeded after they have sent the application form called "incoming student form" and to be downloaded on the website.
This file must be filled, signed and stamped by their sending institution to the following address :
ESAB-International office
18 rue du Château

Competitive admissions examination for the first year (L1)
The examination is open to applicants with a baccalauréat qualification or a recognised equivalent diploma. In special cases, the regional commission which deems other qualifications equivalent (the faculty board of the network of four schools in Brittany) may, after consideration of the application, grant a derogation to sit the entrance examination to applicants without the baccalauréat qualification who can prove a professional artistic experience.

The examinations include :
• two pratical tests (a drawing from observation and a drawing from imagination) of three hours each, to demonstrate creative ability by means of various materials.
• a two-hour general knowledge written test to assess the ability to analyse facts, think and express opinions.
• an interview with one (or several) panel(s) to find out more about the applicant's personal work, knowledge and motivation.

The four schools of the Brittany "Écoles d'arts" network, Brest, Lorient, Quimper and Rennes, have a single entrance examination. The practical and general knowledge tests are common to all the schools. Every applicant may then submit a personal application to the panels of the four schools and is free to choose between all the schools which have granted admission the one which suits best.

Application forms can be obtained from the end of February in one of the four schools or by mail. Only one application is necessary. Applications are submitted between 1st March and 15th April. The examinations are held over three days in Rennes, between mid-April and mid-May.

Admissions during the academic year
A commission examines applications from students who started their studies in another "Écoles d'arts" accredited by the French Ministry for Culture (personal work dossier and academic dossier). Two sessions are organised : one in May and one in June-July. Applicants from schools other than the "Écoles supérieures d'arts" must first submit their application to the Commission Nationale d'Equivalence (the French commisssion which deems other qualifications equivalent). Notification to attend is sent in May, June and July.
Foreign students attend a single session in May, after passing a French test organised by a specific body. For futher information : www.ciep.fr/tcf/agrees.htm

b. Scholarships

French or EU students may be entitled to scholarships from the French Ministry for Culture granted according to social criteria and under certain conditions, for the academic year. These scholarships must not be confused with those granted by the French Ministry for Education (Universities).
Applications for scholarships must be renewed every year and are available at the samed time as the registration forms. Scholarships are paid out for each term. Students receiving them are exonerated from paying Social Security contributions.

c. Tuition fees

ESAB is mainly funded by the Municipality of Brest which sets the amount of tuition fees each year. These fees are to be paid from July. The amount of tuition fees varies according to the year in which the student has registered and his/her place of residence.
